How are Aadhaar cards of urban homeless made, SC asks govt

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on last day asked the Uttar Pradesh government how Aadhaar cards of the urban homeless people were being made. A bench of justices Madan B Lokur and Depak Gupta said that lakhs of homeless would be deprived of getting benefits of welfare schemes.

If a person is homeless, how he is described in the Aadhaar card, the bench asked Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was representing Uttar Pradesh government.

Responding to the query, Mehta said, in all likelihood, they would not have Aadhaar. However, he told the bench that many urban homeless people had permanent address in rural areas and they become homeless after shifting to cities.

He also added that they could get benefits of schemes after getting Aadhaar from their original place of residence.
